Buffalo Bills work out award-winning CFL DE Mathieu Betts

The Buffalo Bills worked out Canadian defensive end Mathieu Betts on Friday.

The 28-year-old led the CFL with 18 sacks this past season with the B.C. Lions and was named the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. He was also named a CFL all-star for the first time in his five-year professional career.

The six-foot-three, 250-pound edge rusher was originally a first-round pick of the Edmonton Football Team in 2019 out of Université Laval. He signed with the team after participating in training camp with the Chicago Bears and made one tackle, two sacks, and one forced fumble as a CFL rookie.

Betts left the Elks after a disappointing season in 2021 and signed a two-year deal with B.C. as a free agent. He quickly became a household name on the West Coast as he’s recorded 25 sacks over 36 regular season games with the Lions.

The Montreal native was a highly-touted prospect coming out of U Sports as he won two Vanier Cups with the Rouge et Or and won the J. P. Metras Trophy three times as the top down lineman in the country. He remains the only player ever to win the award three years in a row.

Betts is currently set to become a free agent in February 2024. Buffalo is his third NFL workout this offseason, following tryouts with the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns.
