Jacksonville Jaguars work out Ottawa Redblacks’ LB Gary Johnson Jr.

The Jacksonville Jaguars worked out Ottawa Redblacks’ linebacker Gary Johnson Jr. on Friday.

The six-foot, 230-pound defender played in 11 games for Ottawa in 2023, contributing almost exclusively on special teams. He notched eight special teams tackles and one forced fumble.

The 27-year-old spent the first three seasons of his CFL career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, joining the team in 2019. He played 14 games for the franchise, posting nine defensive tackles, a sack, and 16 special teams tackles.

The native of Douglas, Ala. played collegiately at the University of Texas following a transfer from Dodge City Community College. He recorded 150 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles over 26 career games with the Longhorns.

The Jaguars also worked out the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ top special teamer, Carthell Flowers-Lloyd, during the session.

Johnson is a pending free agent but can already explore NFL opportunities through the CFL’s annual workout window, which extends from November 20 until February 13, 2024. The first day that CFL players can sign reserve/futures contracts with NFL clubs is January 8, 2024.

The Jaguars (8-4) travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns (7-5) on Sunday, December 10 with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m. ET.
