Stampeders’ LB Micah Awe receives max fine for fourth high hit of the season

Calgary Stampeders’ linebacker Micah Awe has received a maximum fine for his high hit on Montreal Alouettes’ receiver Cole Spieker in Week 16.

The maximum possible fine under the league’s collective bargaining agreement is equal to one-half of a player’s game cheque.

The 29-year-old defender has now been fined four times this season for hits to the head, incurring punishments for high hits on Edmonton quarterback Tre Ford in Week 14, Ottawa quarterback Dustin Crum in Week 7 and Saskatchewan quarterback Mason Fine in Week 6. It is his fifth fine in a calendar year, as Awe was also reprimanded for a high hit which injured Ottawa receiver Jaelon Acklin in Week 18 of last season.

The six-year veteran is currently leading the league in tackles through 16 weeks, having amassed 96 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and two interceptions.

Also receiving supplemental discipline were Montreal Alouettes’ defensive back Reggie Stubblefield, who was fined for a low hit on Calgary Stampeders’ quarterback Jake Maier, and Edmonton Elks’ offensive lineman Mark Korte, who was fined for making late unnecessary contact with B.C. Lions defensive back Jalon Edwards-Cooper.

As per league policy, the amounts of the fines were not disclosed.
