Bombers tap Avon Cobourne to coach running backs

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hired former CFL running back Avon Cobourne as their running backs coach Tuesday.

Cobourne replaces Buck Pierce, who recently became Winnipeg’s quarterbacks coach.

Cobourne began his CFL coaching career in 2014 as the Saskatchewan Roughriders running backs coach.

He played seven CFL seasons, winning the Grey Cup twice with the Montreal Alouettes. Cobourne was also named the 2009 game’s outstanding player.

Cobourne appeared in 98 career games with Montreal and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, rushing for 4,999 yards on 919 carries (5.43-yard average) with 37 touchdowns. He added 276 catches for 2,510 yards and seven TDs.

Cobourne was a CFL all-star in 2009 after rushing for a career-high 1,214 yards.
