The top player in all of U Sports football is facing a number of criminal charges in Quebec court.

Kevin Mital, a star receiver for the Laval University Rouge et Or, has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and uttering threats for an alleged incident that occurred at a bar on Dec. 10, 2021, according to Le Soleil. The French-language newspaper also reported that Mital plans to enter a guilty plea next month, though 3DownNation was unable to confirm this aspect of the report.

The native of St-Hubert, Que. made 58 receptions for 751 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season to win the Hec Crighton Trophy, becoming the first receiver to receive the award since Andy Fantuz in 2005. He made another 27 catches for 371 yards and five touchdowns over four playoff games to help Laval capture the Vanier Cup for the first time since 2018.

In December 2022, Mital told 3DownNation that he planned to return to Laval for one final year of U Sports football in 2023 with plans to enter the professional ranks in 2024. He expected to be one of the top prospects available in the 2024 CFL Draft.

Laval did not immediately reply to 3DownNation’s request for comment.

The Rouge et Or are scheduled to open the regular season at the University of Sherbrooke on Friday, Aug. 25 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
