Former CFL running back Fred Reid hired as high school head coach

Former CFL running back and assistant coach Fred Reid has been hired as the new head coach of the football team at River Ridge High School.

The 41-year-old played five seasons in the CFL as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2007 to 2011, recording 773 carries for 4,451 yards and 22 touchdowns. He set a new team single-game record with 260 rushing yards against the B.C. Lions on Aug. 21, 2009 and was a three-time East Division all-star and one-time CFL all-star.

Reid served as the head coach at Middleton High School in his hometown of Tampa, Fla. from 2014 to 2018 before being hired as the running backs coach of the Toronto Argonauts in 2020 under former Blue Bombers’ teammate Ryan Dinwiddie. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though he remained with the team when play resumed in 2021.

The five-foot-ten, 185-pounder served as the running backs coach of the Ottawa Redblacks in 2022 under former Blue Bombers’ head coach Paul LaPolice. He was not retained following the season as the Redblacks replaced him with Nate Taylor from the University of Ottawa.

River Ridge High School is located in New Port Richey, Fla., which is located approximately 65 kilometres northwest of Tampa near the state coast. The public institution was established in 1991 and has an enrolment of approximately 1,700 students.
