Stampeders’ receiver Malik Henry out for season with ruptured Achilles

The Calgary Stampeders will be without star receiver Malik Henry for the remainder of the 2023 season after he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during Saturday’s loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The 26-year-old took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to break the news, thanking fans for their support.

“To everyone that’s DM’d me or reached out concerning last night, just wanted to give y’all an update. I ruptured my Achilles last night at the game. It’s gonna be a long process but I know God wouldn’t put me through anything I couldn’t handle. Thank you for all the prayers.”

Henry was the Stampeders’ top target in the overtime loss and hauled in four catches for 92 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He suffered a non-contact injury in the fourth quarter and had to be carted off the field.

Through three games this season, Henry has registered 14 receptions for 228 yards and a touchdown.

The West Georgia product is coming off a breakout 2022 season in which he was named a West Division all-star after making 62 receptions for 1,023 yards and eight touchdowns over 13 games. He signed a three-year extension with the team last October, keeping him in Calgary through 2025.

The Stampeders are already facing serious injury concerns with starting running back Ka’Deem Carey and fellow receiver Reggie Begelton already on the six-game injured list. They have a bye in Week 4, before visiting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, July 7.
