Edmonton Elks move Canadian OL Theren Churchill to practice roster, release one

The Edmonton Elks have moved Canadian offensive lineman Theren Churchill to the practice roster.

The team acquired the six-foot-five, 295-pound blocker in a trade from the Toronto Argonauts last month in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2024 CFL Draft. He was a health scratch for the club’s Week 1 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Churchill was originally a first-round pick in the 2020 CFL Draft out of the University of Regina. He appeared in 26 games over two seasons with the Argos and helped the team capture the Grey Cup last November.

Edmonton also released American defensive lineman Marcus Willoughby, who signed with the team late last year. The six-foot-three, 253-pound defender played four seasons (2016-19) at Elon University and recorded 224 total tackles, 16.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles in 43 career games. He was named second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association in his final season with the Phoenix.

The Elks (0-1) are scheduled to visit the B.C. Lions (1-0) on Saturday, June 17 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
