Redblacks sign UTEP safety Ty’Reke James

The Ottawa Redblacks have added American defensive back Ty’Reke James to their training camp roster.

The five-foot-11, 199-pound safety began his college career at Contra Costa College, before transferring to the University of Texas-El Paso for his final four seasons. In 27 games for the Miners, James recorded 83 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, a forced fumble and one interception.

In a corresponding move, the team released defensive back Darius Williams.

The Carson Newman product finished last season on the Redblacks’ practice roster after playing in 10 games with the Montreal Alouettes. He began his CFL career with Edmonton in 2021 and has amassed 39 defensive tackles, 11 special teams tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 24 games.
