Hamilton Tiger-Cats sign QB Taylor Powell, release nine

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed American quarterback Taylor Powell.

The six-foot-two, 207-pound passer completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,111 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions at Eastern Michigan University this past season.

The native of Fayetteville, Ark. played at Troy University in 2021 and completed 66.1 percent of his passes for 1,251 yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Powell’s collegiate career started at the University of Missouri where he played 15 games over three seasons (2017-19). He completed 46 percent of his pass attempt with the Tigers for 431 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

The Ticats also made a wave of cuts, releasing American running back Devontae Dean, American receivers Darvin Kidsy, Neil Pau’u, and Kendrick Price Jr., American offensive lineman Gannon Grider, Canadian offensive lineman Mojtaba Mehry, American defensive lineman Alvin Ward Jr., and American defensive backs Lummie Young IV and RJ Rountree.

The club also announced that Canadian defensive lineman Josh Hyer, the club’s eighth-round pick for the 2023 CFL Draft, has retired.

All CFL teams were required to trim their rosters to 75 players plus non-counters by late Tuesday night. A non-counter is any rookie who was drafted or attending training camp as a territorial exemption.
