Bonecrusher returns: Derek Dennis re-signs with Calgary Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders have re-signed American offensive lineman Derek Dennis, the team announced on Monday. He was scheduled to become a free agent on Feb. 14.

“Derek continues to play at a high level,” said Stampeders’ general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson in a statement. “He’s a vital part of our success and we look forward to him playing championship football for the Calgary Stampeders in 2023.”

The 34-year-old made 14 starts at left tackle this past season one a unit that allowed a league-best 17 sacks and led the way to a league-best 135.3 rushing yards per game. He was named a West Division all-star and CFL all-star and was also named Calgary’s nominee for the league’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award.

Dennis suffered a season-ending leg injury against the B.C. Lions in Week 16. He remains in rehabilitation and indicated through a statement that he is continuing to improve daily to prepare for the upcoming year.

The six-foot-two, 337-pound blocker is a two-time CFL all-star and has been named a West Division all-star four times.

The Temple product has played 86 career regular season CFL games over three separate stints with Calgary dating back to 2015. He was named the league’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in 2016 and won a Grey Cup with the Stampeders in 2018.
