Riders bring back linebacker Alvin Jones Jr., twin brother of Packers RB Aaron Jones

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have brought American linebacker Alvin Jones Jr.  back into the fold for the final two weeks of the regular season.

The 27-year-old originally joined the team in October of last year, before attending training camp with the club in 2022. Jones dressed for both preseason games, recording one tackle and one pass deflection, but was released among the final cuts.    

Prior to arriving in the CFL, Jones spent the bulk of the 2018 and 2019 seasons on the practice roster of the Baltimore Ravens after signing as an undrafted free agent. He saw action in five preseason games, making 18 tackles and one sack.    

Jones Jr. spent his collegiate career at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP), firmly entrenching himself in the school’s record book. The five-foot-11, 230-pound defender played 47 games over five seasons as a Miner, making 343 tackles. He finished third in program history with 40 tackles for loss and fourth with 15 sacks, while adding one interception, seven pass deflections and three forced fumbles.

The versatile linebacker was selected as an All-Conference USA honourable mention twice in his career, while making the second team in 2016. He was also honoured as a member of the all-freshman team in his debut season.

Alvin Jones Jr. is the fraternal twin brother of Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones.

In a corresponding move, the Riders released American defensive back Devin Jones.
