The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and Sherbrooke Vert et Or have cracked the U Sports top ten football rankings after impressive victories this past weekend.

Wilfrid Laurier smashed the Windsor Lancers by a score of 49-11 as first-year quarterback Taylor Elgersma had the best game of his young collegiate career, throwing for 221 yards and three touchdowns. First-year running back Quentin Scott also had a strong performance, rushing for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Sherbrooke firmly established itself as the third-best team in the RSEQ after beating the Concordia Stingers by a score of 38-14. Second-year running back Lucas Dalin ran for 164 yards and one touchdown, while the Vert et Or defence limited its opponent to 216 yards of total offence and intercepted third-year quarterback Olivier Roy three times.

This marks the first time that Wilfrid Laurier or Sherbrooke has appeared on the rankings this season. They now stand as follows.

1. Western Mustangs (5-0)
2. Saskatchewan Huskies (5-0)
3. Montreal Carabins (4-0)
4. Queen’s Golden Gaels (5-1)
5. Laval Rouge et Or (4-1)
6. Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-1)
7. Regina Rams (4-1)
8. St. FX X-Men (4-0)
9. Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-2)
10. Sherbrooke Vert et Or (3-2)

The Mustangs have been atop the rankings all season, though they were not unanimously awarded first place by the U Sports football media panel this week. There was no movement in any of the top five positions, though the Gee-Gees and Rams flipped following Ottawa’s victory in the Panda Game.

The Manitoba Bisons (2-3) and Carleton Ravens (3-3) fell out of the rankings following one-sided losses to Saskatchewan and Ottawa, respectively.
