It could be some time before we see Canadian quarterback Tre Ford back on a CFL field after the Edmonton Elks added him to their six-game injured list on Friday.

Ford has missed the Elks’ last two games after suffering a collarbone injury in the first quarter of their Week 5 loss to the Calgary Stampeders but previously received one-game injury designations in the hopes of a prompt recovery. A return following Edmonton’s Week 8 bye was speculated, but Ford was unable to practice all week and saw his status upgraded to the six-game list.

The reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner as the top player in Canadian university football, the Elks took Ford with the eighth overall pick in the 2022 CFL Draft — making him the first quarterback selected in the first round since 1980.

The Waterloo product made his first career start in Week 4 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, becoming the first Canadian university quarterback to win a regular-season game since 1985. Ford was 15-of-26 for 159 yards passing, a touchdown and an interception in that game while adding six carries for 61 yards. He was two-of-three passing for 52 yards before his injury the next week.

In Ford’s absence, American Taylor Cornelius has taken over the starting duties. In two starts, the Oklahoma State product is 44-of-73 passing for 500 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while adding 19 carries for 79 yards on the ground.
