Stampeders rule out star running back Ka’Deem Carey against Ottawa Redblacks

The Calgary Stampeders have ruled out star running back Ka’Deem Carey from Friday’s game against the Ottawa Redblacks, placing him on the one-game injured list.

The 29-year-old recorded is currently the league’s second-leading rusher with 72 carries for 471 yards and five touchdowns on the year. He has also made 13 receptions for 114 yards. He did not participate in practice this week due to a hamstring injury.

Dedrick Mills will make his first CFL start in place of Carey. The rookie has dressed for one game this season, recording two carries for 28 yards.

Calgary also moved offensive lineman Sean McEwen (ankle) and boundary cornerback Tre Roberson (knee) to the six-game injured list. Both players left the club’s recent loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers due to injury and did not return.

McEwen is a two-time CFL all-star who has started all six games at centre. The former first-round pick has started 20 games with the Stampeders since joining his hometown team as a free agent in February 2020 following a four-year stint with the Toronto Argonauts.

Roberson has started five games at boundary cornerback this season, recording 17 defensive tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble. He is in his fourth season as a member of the team and was named a CFL all-star in 2021.

The Stampeders (4-2) are slated to visit the Ottawa Redblacks (1-6) on Friday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
