Redblacks’ QB Jeremiah Masoli undergoes successful leg surgery following hit from Riders’ Garrett Marino

Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Jeremiah Masoli successfully underwent surgery on his injured leg Thursday and is expected to return to the field in ten to twelve weeks, according to the team.

The face of the franchise will rehab his injury in Ottawa and could be available for the end of the 2022 season. The injury is believed to be bone-related in nature.

Masoli was injured on an illegal hit from defensive tackle Garrett Marino late in his team’s Week 5 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Marino has since been suspended four games by the CFL: two for the hit on Masoli, one for an illegal hit on offensive tackle Dino Boyd, and one for making verbal comments about Masoli’s heritage.

Marino has since apologized for the incident in a written statement but has not publicly addressed the media.

The Redblacks are currently winless through four games and expected to start second-year quarterback Caleb Evans against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats this week. The team recently traded with the Edmonton Elks for the services of Nick Arbuckle, who could take over as starter as early as Week 7.
