Montreal Carabins win gold at first-ever women’s Canadian Collegiate Flag Football Championship

The Université de Montréal Carabins won the gold medal at the inaugural Canadian Collegiate Flag Football Championship, defeating the UQAM Citadins by a score of 26-19 on Saturday night.

The Citadins had a slim 12-7 lead at half-time in the championship clash between undefeated round robin teams from Quebec, before the Carabins stormed back to seize national bragging rights.

Earlier in the evening, the University of Regina steamrolled Nova Scotia 33-0 to take the bronze medal.

Ten women’s teams from across Canada — three from Ontario, three from Saskatchewan, two from Quebec, and one each from Manitoba and Nova Scotia — travelled to Carleton University in Ottawa to take part in the historic event on behalf of their schools.

The event was part of Football Canada’s first ever National Women’s Football Weekend. The action wrapped up Sunday with the Team Canada Senior Women’s Red-White Game as part of the selection process for the the team that will represent Canada at the 2022 Women’s World Championship in tackle football this summer in Finland.

The scrimmage will be the first time in history that a Football Canada competition will be officiated by a crew of officials made up entirely of Canadian women.
