Former CFL player Michael Carter arrested, charged with multiple sexual crimes

Former CFL player Michael Hampden-Carter, better known as Michael Carter, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation after two persons under the age of 18 came forward to Windsor Police in March.

At the time of the alleged incident in January, Carter was an employee of the Greater Essex County School Board and served as a high school advisor. Due to the nature of his position, he had involvement with multiple schools and has served as a coach and mentor in the local football community for several years.

Police determined that Carter was communicating both in-person and through social media with both victims prior to the alleged assaults, leading to his arrest without incident on April 2. Investigators believe there is potential for more victims and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

According to Windsor Star reporter Dalson Chen, Carter serves as the director of a non-profit football organization in Tecumseh, ON called BTG Football. His Greater Essex County School Board bio describes him as “a former CFL player, a former probation and parole officer, a youth advisor, and a coach for young athletes.”

The 35-year-old was selected 19th overall in the third round of the 2011 CFL Draft by the B.C. Lions after an NCAA career at the University of Maryland. He was released by the team after training camp, but spent seven seasons in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Football Team and Toronto Argonauts.

Carter played 65 games over that span, making eight starts. He finished his career in 2017 with 34 defensive tackles and 19 special teams tackles.
