Montreal Alouettes sign Elks’ castoff, defensive back Darius Williams

The Montreal Alouettes have signed recently released defensive back Darius Williams to a contract.

The five-foot-10, 195-pound Williams was let go by the Edmonton Elks on Monday after appearing in all 14 of games during the shortened 2021 schedule as a rookie. He recorded 30 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles and one forced fumble while playing strong-side linebacker and halfback.

“Darius is a young player with tremendous potential,” Als general manager Danny Maciocia said. “He had a good rookie season in Edmonton last year and his best years are ahead of him, which is very encouraging.”

The former Carson-Newman University Eagle played in the East-West Shrine Bowl in 2020, after four seasons at the NCAA level. In 41 games, the St. Petersburg, FL native amassed 179 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, nine pass break-ups, eight interceptions, recovering two fumbles and notching one sack. In 2017 he became the 122nd player in school history to be named to the Don Hansen All-America team.
