Tiger-Cats re-sign ratio-breaking Canadian offensive lineman Chris Van Zeyl

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have re-signed Canadian offensive lineman Chris Van Zeyl, per sources.

It’s a two-year contract extension for Van Zeyl through the 2023 season. He was scheduled to become a free agent on Tuesday, February 8. The 38-year-old has played 12 seasons and 180 games in the CFL.

Van Zeyl was originally selected out of McMaster University by the Montreal Alouettes in the third round, 18th overall during the 2007 CFL Draft before joining the Argonauts in September 2008.

He has won two Grey Cups, both with Toronto. However, the Fonthill, ON native wants to win one with the franchise located closest to his hometown. The league’s 2019 Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman wanted to stay in the Steel City.

The six-foot-six, 312-pound Van Zeyl started at right tackle in the CFL championship last year when the Ticats lost 33-25 in overtime to the Blue Bombers. It was the second straight defeat Hamilton suffered against Winnipeg with the big silver trophy on the line, but the latest one will be on his mind during the off-season.
