Canadian DL Jonathan Kongbo signs contract with Denver Broncos

Canadian defensive end Jonathan Kongbo has signed a contract with the Denver Broncos.

He worked out in the Mile High City on Tuesday, January 11. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers recently released Kongbo in order to allow him to further pursue an NFL agreement.

Kongbo, who played his NCAA football at the University of Tennessee, has spent most of his pro football career in the CFL as a member of the Bombers. In his two seasons in Canada, Kongbo made 28 tackles and recorded four sacks while appearing in 30 games, including two starts.

Between the 2019 and 2021 CFL seasons, Kongbo spent nearly eight months with the 49ers during the 2020 off-season before being designated as waived and injured in August of that year.

At Tennessee, Kongbo appeared in 30 games over three seasons and made 51 total tackles for the Volunteers, including 5.5 tackles for loss. He also had 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, two passes defenced and one defensive touchdown before suffering a season-ending injury during his senior season in 2018.

Kongbo will be added to the Broncos’ 90-man active roster after the 2021 NFL season officially concludes in March.
