Calgary Stampeders’ quarterback Jake Maier has tested positive for COVID-19, according to Danny Austin. He entered COVID protocol on Tuesday, a designation that is given to players who have either contracted the virus or are a close contact of someone who has.

Maier has been the backup behind Bo Levi Mitchell since becoming the first quarterback in league history to throw for 300-plus yards in each of his first three starts.

The 24-year-old became Calgary’s starting quarterback in Week 3 after it was determined that Mitchell had suffered a fractured fibula. It was a surprise decision at the time given that Canadian quarterback Michael O’Connor had dressed as Mitchell’s backup in the first two games of the season.

The UC Davis product has completed 84-of-125 pass attempts for 1,019 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions this season. Calgary has a 1-2 record in those games, though that hasn’t been due to the lack of a passing game.
