Stampeders safety Royce Metchie out for season with bicep injury

The Calgary Stampeders have placed starting safety Royce Metchie on the six-game injured list with a bicep injury.

The Guelph product suffered the injury on Sept. 17 in a game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and will undergo season-ending surgery. In seven games this season, the three-year veteran has recorded 31 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble.

The former third-round draft pick started 17 games for Calgary at safety during the 2019 season, recording 55 total tackles and three interceptions. He is the older brother of University of Alabama receiver John Metchie III.

Calgary has also signed American offensive lineman D.J. Coker, who was with the team in training camp.

Coker played 24 games over four seasons at Rhodes College, a Division III school in Memphis, Tennessee. He earned American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches’ All-American honours as well as first-team all-Southern Athletic Association recognition in each of his final two seasons.

He was the first player in program history to be named an All-American in consecutive years.

The Stamps also announced the release of American offensive lineman Leon Johnson, who dressed for one game this season.
