Bombers Select Waggoner In Supplemental Draft

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have forfeited their first round selection in the 2016 CFL draft to select Dartmouth LB Garrett Waggoner in the 2015 CFL Supplemental Draft.

Waggoner put up unbelievable testing numbers (4.57 40 yard dash, 39″ vertical leap, and twenty-six bench press reps) leading up to the NFL draft and should be ready to compete with Sam Hurl for the starting weak-side linebacker spot in Richie Hall’s defense from day one of Bomber training camp. Waggoner, along with Central Michigan product Jarret Chapman, makes up a 2015 Supplemental Draft class that TSN’s Duane Forde called “the best since 2011.” 2011’s supplemental draft produced two CFL starters in all-star Ted Laurent and current BC Lion wide receiver Kito Poblah.

This move is a serious roll of the dice for a Winnipeg club that cannot afford to miss on national prospects. The Winnipeg Sun’s Kirk Penton confirmed via twitter that the Bombers conducted a private workout with Waggoner, while Sportsnet’s Justin Dunk reported that the “Bombers would’ve rated [Waggoner] as the best defensive player in [the] 2015 CFL draft, if he had been eligible.” Clearly, the Bombers love this kid. Let’s just hope Waggoner lives up to his hype heading into the 2015 campaign.
