The Saskatchewan Roughriders released three players on Wednesday, including American defensive back Hamp Cheevers, American linebacker Deshaun Davis, and Canadian offensive lineman Jesse Lawson.
Cheevers attended Boston College and spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Tennessee Titans before coming north. He initially signed with the Riders in January 2020.
Davis was originally selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round, 210th overall during the 2019 NFL draft. He spent time with the Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Roughriders in May 2020.
He was a candidate to fill the middle linebacker role vacated by veteran Larry Dean, who recently suffered a torn Achilles tendon.
Lawson was an seventh-round pick out of Carleton University in the 2020 CFL Draft. The six-foot-six, 285-pound played in the 2019 East-West Bowl and was in the CFL’s top-20 Scouting Bureau list for much of 2019.
Prior to attending Carleton, the B.C. native spent time with the Langley Rams and the White Rock Titans of the Canadian Junior Football League.
