Riders sign burly Canadian offensive lineman Carter Comeau

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed Canadian offensive lineman Carter Comeau, per league sources.

Coming in at a burly six-foot-six and 364 pounds, Comeau spent two seasons with the University of Calgary Dinos and played in 14 career games. In 2019, he was part of a bruising and dominant Dinos offensive line that helped the team to a Vanier Cup championship over the University Montreal Carabins, it was Calgary’s first national title since 1995.

A relative newcomer to the game of football, the Riverton, MB native originally followed in the footsteps of his uncle, 13-year NHL veteran Reggie Leach, into the sport of hockey. While working as a referee in Kelowna, B.C. in 2017, he landed a tryout with the Canadian Junior Football League’s Okanagan Sun and quickly emerged as a 21-year-old rookie.

A mauler who is still developing his technique, Comeau went unselected in the 2021 CFL Draft. He now joins Dinos teammate Logan Bandy, selected in the fifth round, 38th overall by the Riders, in Regina, while Argos’ selection Peter Nicastro and Lions’ draft pick Tyler Packer round out a quartet of Dinos big men entering the league in 2021.

Comeau needs to shed weight from his frame to be taken seriously at the professional level, but he has the sheer size and strength to make an impact with the Riders.
