Winnipeg church trolls Saskatchewan Roughriders with witty COVID-19 sign

Even in a pandemic, prairie rivalries stay strong.

The Abundant Life Baptist Church in Winnipeg put a CFL-inspired message on its sign this past weekend. Located on Plessis Road in northeast Winnipeg, the slogan targeted members of Rider Nation.

“WEAR A MASK,” read the sign. “IT’S NOT LIKE WE’RE ASKING YOU TO WEAR A RIDERS JERSEY.”

Blue Bombers fullback John Rush tweeted the photo on and it went viral, garnering over 400 retweets and over 2,750 likes.

The Bombers visited the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 2019 West Final, narrowly securing a 20-13 victory at Mosaic Stadium. It marked the first time the prairie rivals met in the West Final since 1972.

Winnipeg went on to upset the Tiger-Cats in the Grey Cup, defeating Hamilton by a score of 33-12.

The sign is a clever take on the COVID-19 pandemic. We could all use a little levity and we applaud the Abundant Life Baptist Church for providing CFL fans with a much-needed laugh this weekend.
