Ottawa Redblacks’ KR DeVonte Dedmon ruled out for season with shoulder injury

Published on

Ottawa Redblacks’ kick returner DeVonte Dedmon will miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury, according to multiple reports. The first to report the news was AJ Jakubec, who is the voice of the team for TSN 1200.

The five-foot-ten, 200-pound speedster first joined the Redblacks as a free agent in 2019 and returned two kicks for touchdowns in just five games. He continued to break out after returning in 2021, recording 2,841 return yards with three return touchdowns to be named a CFL all-star and the league’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player.

Dedmon is the fastest player in CFL history to record five return touchdowns in a career, doing so in just 15 games. The previous record was set by Canadian Football Hall of Fame returner Henry ‘Gizmo’ Williams in 1987.

The 26-year-old signed with the Miami Dolphins this past off-season but returned to the Redblacks in August after being released down south. He was injured during the club’s Week 2 loss to the Calgary Stampeders.

Through 24 career games, Dedmon has recorded 23 receptions for 219 yards, 12 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown, 94 punt returns for 1,329 yards and three touchdowns, 77 kickoff returns for 2,035 yards and two touchdowns, and seven missed field goal returns for 185 yards.

The Redblacks (0-2) will host the Edmonton Elks (0-3) on Friday, June 30 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT. Second-year quarterback Tyrie Adams will make his first career start with Jeremiah Masoli still out due to a leg injury he suffered last summer.
