Canadian DL Tyson Hergott retires from CFL at age 24

Canadian defensive lineman Tyson Hergott has retired from the Canadian Football League at the age of 24.

The six-foot-two, 246-pound defender was originally a third-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft by the Toronto Argonauts. He dressed for 15 regular-season games as a rookie and recorded two defensive tackles and seven special teams tackles, helping the team win the Grey Cup over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Vancouver, B.C.

The native of Waterloo, Ont. dressed for only four regular-season games in 2025, spending most of the year on the six-game injured list. He recorded two special teams tackles.

Hergott confirmed his retirement to 3DownNation, though he declined to reveal what he has planned for his future now that his playing career is over.

The University of Waterloo product was named a first-team U Sports All-Canadian in 2023 after making 44 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, three pass knockdowns, three forced fumbles, and one interceptions over nine games.

The Argonauts have also signed American defensive lineman Charlie Looes.

The six-foot-three, 283-pound defender spent time with the Edmonton Elks in 2025, though he didn’t see any regular-season action. The 24-year-old native of Hillsdale, N.J. played collegiately at Dartmouth and Rice. In 2024, he made 43 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and one forced fumble with the Owls.

The Toronto Argonauts finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5-13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Franchise quarterback Chad Kelly was unable to play all season due to a fractured leg he suffered in the East Final the previous year, giving way to Nick Arbuckle, who threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions to be named the team’s candidate for Most Outstanding Player.

The Argonauts ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh with a turnover differential of minus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was Spencer Brown with 314 yards, leading receiver was Dejon Brissett with 907 yards, and leading tackler was Cameron Judge with 79 tackles. Toronto ranked ninth in attendance with average crowds of 15,109, which was a 0.1 percent decrease from the previous year.
