Toronto Argonauts hire Ka’Deem Carey, finalize 2026 coaching staff

The Toronto Argonauts have finalized their coaching staff under new head coach Mike Miller, which includes longtime CFL running back Ka’Deem Carey.

The 33-year-old will serve as running backs coach after playing the position in the CFL for the last eight years. He rushed for 3,956 yards, caught 128 passes for 1,097 yards, and scored 28 touchdowns over 65 regular-season games with the Calgary Stampeders, Argonauts, and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He suffered a gruesome leg injury with the Roughriders in 2025, which ended his season.

The native of Tucson, Ariz. has finished his playing career with one All-CFL selection, three All-Division selections, and three Grey Cup victories. He was originally a fourth-round pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2014 NFL Draft and played three seasons with the team, rushing for 443 yards, catching 13 passes for 131 yards, and scoring three touchdowns.

As previously reported by 3DownNation, Greg Quick is Toronto’s new defensive coordinator. The 69-year-old spent the last five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, helping the team win a Grey Cup in 2023. He previously served as the defensive coordinator in Saskatchewan in 2015 and has twice before been a member of the coaching staff in Toronto. Jason Shivers, who served as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2025, was let go in December despite having one year left on his contract.

Chris Miller will be the team’s new quarterbacks coach. He and head coach Mike Miller previously worked together for three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals when Mike was the offensive coordinator and Chris was the quarterbacks coach. The native of Pomona, Calif. was originally a first-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 1987 and spent 10 years playing quarterback in the NFL, earning one Pro Bowl selection. The 60-year-old has primarily since coached at the high school level, save for a one-year stint as the offensive coordinator of the Houston Roughnecks.

Demetrious Maxie has returned to the Argonauts after helping the team win a championship in 2024. He will serve as the club’s defensive line coach and assistant head coach after being the special teams coordinator and a defensive assistant with the Edmonton Elks in 2025. The 52-year-old native of Shreveport, La. played 13 seasons in the league, five of which were spent with the Argonauts. The four-time Grey Cup-winner was twice named All-CFL.

Mickey Donovan is returning as the team’s special teams coordinator, a role he’s held since 2022. The two-time Grey Cup champion has been in Canadian football since he was a standout linebacker at Concordia University in the early 2000s, where he later served a four-year stint as the team’s head coach. Donovan was interviewed for the team’s vacant head coaching job in November following the departure of Ryan Dinwiddie.

Jovon Johnson has been hired as Toronto’s defensive backs coach. The Erie, Pa. native recorded 564 defensive tackles, 76 pass knockdowns, 35 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, 10 special teams tackles, eight sacks, and eight defensive touchdowns over 12 CFL seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Ottawa Redblacks, Montreal Alouettes, and Roughriders. The two-time All-CFL and five-time All-Division selection has spent the past six years coaching in the United States, most recently at Gannon University.

Former CFL player Kierrie Johnson will be the new receivers coach for the Argonauts after spending the last six years coaching youth in his hometown of Houston, Texas. The 37-year-old played for the B.C. Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Ottawa Redblacks, and Argonauts from 2011 to 2015, catching 54 passes for 747 yards and one touchdown.

Dom Picard has become the team’s offensive line coach after spending the last two seasons working with the running backs. The 43-year-old native of Sainte-Foy, Que. played 10 seasons in the CFL at centre with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Argonauts, and Roughriders, winning one Grey Cup. He won another Grey Cup as a coach with Toronto in 2024. He coached in the CEGEP and U Sports ranks prior to joining the Boatmen.

Bubba Walker has come aboard as Toronto’s assistant linebackers and quality control coach. The native of Pittsburgh, Pa. has primarily coached at the NCAA level, including stints at Valdosta State, Georgia, and Georgia Southern.

Colyn Haugh will be the assistant offensive line and quality control coach in Toronto after previously working at Robert Morris University, St. Francis University, Westminster College, and Edinboro University. He served as the head coach at Kiski Area High School in 2025. Haugh played at Robert Morris University where he was coached by Mike Miller.
