The Toronto Argonauts have interviewed yet another member of their coaching staff for the vacant head coach position.
According to a report from TSN’s Dave Naylor, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Kevin Eiben is the latest person to be considered for the role. He joins QB coach Mike Miller, receivers coach Pete Costanza, and special teams coordinator Mickey Donovan as internal candidates who are confirmed to have interviewed.
Eiben joined the Argos coaching staff in 2017 following a four-year run at the U Sports level with McMaster and Toronto. He spent two seasons as Toronto’s special teams coordinator before moving to linebackers coach in 2019. He became co-defensive coordinator alongside William Fields ahead of the 2024 season and helped win a Grey Cup as part of that unusual arrangement, maintaining the title in 2025 after the hiring of Jason Shivers.
The 46-year-old native of Delta, B.C., played linebacker with Toronto from 2001 to 2011, earning three CFL all-star selections, five East Division all-star selections, and winning three Grey Cups. He also played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2012.
The Argonauts’ head coach job became available after Ryan Dinwiddie, the team’s two-time Grey Cup-winning head coach, left for the Ottawa Redblacks to become bench boss and general manager. Toronto unsuccessfully tried to woo Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ head coach Mike O’Shea. They have reportedly targeted former Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Kent Austin as a candidate, and have also interviewed former B.C. Lions and Ottawa Redblacks head coach Rick Campbell.
Toronto finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5-13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Chad Kelly was unable to play all season due to a fractured leg he suffered in the East Final in 2024. Nick Arbuckle threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions to be named the team’s Most Outstanding Player.
The Argos ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh with a turnover differential of minus-eight. The team’s leading rusher was Spencer Brown with 314 yards, the leading receiver was Dejon Brissett with 907 yards, and the leading tackler was Cameron Judge with 79 tackles. The Argos ranked ninth in attendance with 15,109 average fans at BMO Field, which was a 0.1 percent decrease from the previous year.
