‘I’m confident we’ll keep him here’: Alouettes GM Danny Maciocia prioritizes re-signing Tyson Philpot

Montreal Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia addressed the media for his end-of-season availability on Tuesday and the biggest topic of discussion was the future of star receiver Tyson Philpot.

The native of Delta, B.C. doesn’t yet have a contract for next year, but Maciocia believes the association between the receiver and the Alouettes will continue.

“I’m confident that we’ll keep him here,” he said. “For us, it’s important to keep him. He was a first-round pick — we traded for the pick knowing he could be available at that spot. We saw the potential in him. He’s young, we want to keep him here. With the receivers we have, with the quarterback we have, we can have a lot of success on offence.”

“He’s an excellent receiver who can perform in big games. The key for us is to sit down with him and his agent and see how we can hopefully get a deal done in the next weeks or months. Tyson wants to be here, we want him here. Now we need to sit down and try to find a deal.”

The 25-year-old finished the year with 61 catches for 804 yards and five touchdowns. He had 87 yards on five catches in the 112th Grey Cup, continuing to show his ability to make plays in critical moments. His chemistry with quarterback Davis Alexander is also evident.

When a colleague asked Maciocia if Philpot did enough to be in the top ten or twenty receivers in the league, the general manager didn’t want to commit too much.

“If it’s top 20, yes. He’s an excellent receiver, I don’t need to tell you how much we appreciate him. It’s not only fans who appreciate him, it’s the entire organization. We’ll do everything possible to keep him in Montreal. There is a strong desire from him to play in Montreal with Davis (Alexander).”

Philpot mentioned to the media on Tuesday that he wanted a deal that would make sense for him and his family. Otherwise, he could go to free agency, where eight other teams would likely be interested in his services.

“I don’t have a crystal ball,” he said. “I can’t guess what’s going to happen … but it has to make sense for my family and I.”

The Montreal Alouettes finished second in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 10-8 record and beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Final before losing the 112th Grey Cup to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Davis Alexander went 7-0 as a starter during the regular-season, though he missed 11 games due to a hamstring injury.

The Alouettes ranked eighth in net offence, first in net defence, and third with a turnover differential of plus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was Stevie Scott III with 418 yards, leading receiver was Tyler Snead with 1,129 yards, and leading tackler was Darnell Sankey with 103 tackles. Montreal finished sixth in attendance with average crowds of 21,132, which was a 0.8 percent decrease from the previous year.
