Montreal Alouettes’ QB Davis Alexander says there’s ‘no doubt’ he’ll play in Grey Cup despite hamstring injury

Davis Alexander doesn’t think there’s any chance he’ll miss next week’s Grey Cup despite appearing to re-aggravate his hamstring injury in the late stages of the East Final against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“There is no doubt you will see me next week,” Alexander told TSN’s Matthew Scianitti postgame. “We feel like we’re made for this. Whoever we play, it’s going to be an amazing game, it’s gonna be an amazing atmosphere. We’re built on competition and that’s what we’re gonna have to do next week.”

Near the midway point of the fourth quarter, the 27-year-old passer grabbed his left hamstring after being tackled near the sideline on second down. The Alouettes failed to earn a fresh set of downs, which allowed the Tiger-Cats kick a 23-yard field goal to tie the game at 16-16 with a little under two minutes remaining.

Alexander didn’t miss any plays for the Alouettes, taking the field after his team regained possession. He then engineered a seven-play, 37-yard drive that led to a game-winning 45-yard field goal from Jose Maltos Díaz with no time left on the clock.

The five-foot-eleven, 210-pound passer completed 19-of-26 pass attempts for 210 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the victory with the score occurring on a deep shot to Tyler Snead. Alexander also ran the ball seven times for 64 yards in what was a relatively defensive game overall.

The native of Gig Harbor, Wa. missed eleven regular-season games this year due to a hamstring injury. Montreal went 7-0 with him in the lineup and 3-8 when he was unable to play, giving way to McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Caleb Evans, and James Morgan.

With the win, the Alouettes have qualified for the Grey Cup for the second time in three years. The club defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 28-24 in the 110th Grey Cup in Hamilton in 2023 and will now play the winner of the West Final in the 112th Grey Cup at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.
