The province of Saskatchewan is getting primed for the Roughriders’ West Final appearance a little early, by government decree.
On Thursday, Premier Scott Moe officially proclaimed Friday, November 7, 2025, as Green and White Day. The 52-year-old leader of the Saskatchewan Party government made the announcement at the legislature alongside mascot Gainer the Gopher, who signed the document with a comically large marker.
“We are encouraging Saskatchewan to bring out their green and white as our beloved Roughriders gear up for Saturday’s Western Final,” Moe said. “Green and White Day is a time to show off our Rider pride and share our love of Canadian football as Rider Nation gets ready for Saturday’s big game. Go Riders!”
Gainer, who does not speak, delivered his own message through his translator, Roughriders president and CEO Craig Reynolds.
“It is time to paint the province green and white! Gainer’s got his fur brushed up, his jersey ready, and he can not wait to see Rider Nation showing their colours loud and proud.”
While this fun effort to drum up provincial pride ahead of Saturday’s West Final may not mean much legally, the Riders do hold considerable sway in Saskatchewan’s halls of power. Last week, the government proposed legislation that will allow tailgating outside Mosaic Stadium ahead of home games beginning next season at the team’s behest.
Since 1972, when West Finals became single-game events, the Riders have hosted just four times. The franchise has also won just four Grey Cups, with the most recent being in 2013.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (12-6) will host the B.C. Lions (12-7) in the West Final at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Saturday, November 8, with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m. EST. The Lions defeated the Calgary Stampeders by a score of 33-30 in the West Semi-Final, while the Roughriders were on bye after finishing atop the West Division standings.
The weather forecast in Regina calls for a high of minus-six degrees and mainly sunny conditions. The game will be broadcast on TSN and RDS in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune in on 730 CKNW in Vancouver and 620 CKRM in Regina.
