Bishop’s QB Justin Quirion named AUS Most Valuable Player for second consecutive year

Bishop’s University quarterback Justin Quirion has been named Atlantic University Sports’ Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row.

The fourth-year student from Saint Georges, Que., completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,959 yards, 15 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in eight games for the Gaiters, leading the AUS in all major passing categories. He also ran for 86 yards.

Quirion will now become the conference’s nominee for the Hec Crighton Trophy, which is awarded to the top player in U Sports. No AUS player has won the award since Saint Mary’s quarterback Erik Glavic in 2007.

St. FX linebacker Owen Watrych received the Tony Proudfoot Trophy as the conference’s top stand-up defensive player after leading the nation with 73.5 total tackles and will now vie for the President’s Trophy. Saint Mary’s offensive lineman Cailob Allaby will be a finalist for the J.P. Metras Trophy as the conference’s top down lineman, while Bishop’s receiver and wildcat quarterback Mathieu Bellavance is up for the Peter Gorman Trophy as the country’s top rookie.

Additionally, Saint Mary’s head coach Steve Sumarah has been put forward for Coach of the Year, St. FX defensive backs coach Bryce Fisher was nominated as for the Gino Fracas Award as the nation’s top assistant, and Saint Mary’s punter Cameron Brown is up for the Russ Jackson Award for outstanding student-athlete community service.

The conference also unveiled it’s all-star selections, headlined be 15 players fromthe Saint Mary’s Huskies. The full list can be read below.
