Canadian senior men’s national team cements coaching staff for Gridiron Nations Championship versus Italy, Germany

The Canadian Senior Men’s National Tackle Football Team has unveiled its coaching and operational staff prior to the Gridiron Nations Championship in November, including several notable names.

In addition to head coach and general manager Jesse Maddox, University of Alberta head coach Stevenson Bone will return as the team’s offensive coordinator. Former York defensive coordinator Sammy Okpro will also be back in that role, as will special teams coordinator and former CFL safety Craig Butler.

“We have compiled a staff we believe will help set the tone and ensure we get the most of our players,” Maddox said in a statement.

Other notable names on the staff include offensive assistant Travis Miller, who serves as head coach of the CJFL finalist Okanagan Sun, and offensive line coach Chris Marshall, who serves in the same capacity for Western University under his father, Greg Marshall. Prolific CFL agent Fred Weinrauch, who represents numerous stars including quarterbacks Davis Alexander and Tre Ford, has also been added as a special advisor to the head coach and general manager.

The Senior Men’s National Team returned to action for the first time in 14 years last April, demolishing Team Italy 56-0 in an international friendly in Sardinia. They will return to Europe next week for a rematch against Italy on Sunday, November 9, in Milan, before then facing Team Germany in Bochum on Sunday, November 16.

The two European sides recently faced off in the IFAF European Championship bronze medal game, with Italy winning 17-14. The team with the best record after the conclusion of the three-game round robin will win the Gridiron Nations Championship.

Team Canada’s world tour will conclude on Saturday, December 13 in Mexico City, where they’ll face Team Mexico in another international friendly.
