The Philadelphia Eagles have traded Canadian receiver John Metchie III and a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft to the New York Jets in exchange for defensive back Michael Carter II and a seventh-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, as per a report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
Metchie III has recorded four catches for 18 yards this season, dressing for seven games in a depth role.
The native of Brampton, Ont. was originally selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He missed his entire his rookie season after being diagnosed with leukemia but returned to the field in 2023. Over 29 games with the Texans, he made 40 catches for 412 yards and one touchdown.
The six-foot, 195-pound target was traded by the Texans to the Eagles in August.
Metchie made 155 receptions over three collegiate seasons at the University of Alabama, recording 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns. He won the Jon Cornish Trophy in 2021 as the top Canadian player in the NCAA, despite suffering a torn ACL in that year’s SEC Championship Game.
Metchie is the younger brother of Edmonton Elks safety Royce Metchie. The B.C. Lions hold his CFL rights after selecting him in the seventh round of the 2022 CFL Draft.
The Jets currently sit fourth in the AFC East standings with a record of 1-7.
