Calgary Stampeders award Derrick Moncrief with Presidents’ Ring

The Calgary Stampeders have awarded strong-side linebacker Derrick Moncrief with the Presidents’ Ring.

The award is given annually to a player “who best demonstrates excellence on and off the field” based on their “in-game contributions, leadership, inspiration, and motivational skills.” Voting is conducted by the players.

“First off I want to thank God for winning this prestigious award,” said Moncrief in a statement. “Without Him, I wouldn’t be here to display my gifts. Secondly, a major shoutout to my teammates who voted for me. When I think about being a servant on and off the field, it’s all about inspiring, uplifting and encouraging those around me to help them become a better version of themselves.”

Moncrief has recorded 63 defensive tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one touchdown over 17 regular-season starts this year. The 32-year-old native of Pratt, Ala. is in his first season with the team following stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, and Edmonton Elks. He was twice named All-West Division with the Green and White.

The six-foot-two, 220-pound defender has helped coach a Sport Calgary football camp for new Canadians and supported the PinkPower game, which promotes awareness for women’s cancers.

“The players have made an excellent selection with Derrick and I congratulate him for this well-deserved honour,” said Stampeders president Jay McNeil. “Upon his arrival, he quickly established himself as one of our leaders and his performance on and off the field has played an instrumental role in the team’s improvement in 2025.”

Previous winners of the Presidents’ Ring include Reggie Begelton, Derek Wiggan, Jamar Wall, Brandon Smith, Micah Johnson, Josh Bell, Deron Mayo, Rob Cote, Corey Mace, Keon Raymond, and Rob Lazeo.

The Calgary Stampeders (10-7) will visit the Edmonton Elks (7-10) at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday, October 24 with kickoff slated for 9:30 p.m. EDT. The Stampeders are coming off a blowout win over the Toronto Argonauts, while the Elks were eliminated from playoff contention following a loss to the B.C. Lions.

The weather forecast in Edmonton calls for a high of 14 degrees with a mix of sun and cloud. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on 770 CHQR in Calgary and 880 CHED in Edmonton.
