The Western Mustangs and Montreal Carabins have both fallen one spot down the U Sports rankings following heavyweight losses this past weekend.
The Mustangs suffered one of the most one-sided losses in program history, losing 60-13 against the top-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Laurier erupted for 33 points in the third quarter in London as Cal Wither threw for 363 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception in the victory. Western managed only 258 yards of net offence in the loss, with their lone touchdown coming courtesy of Jerome Rancourt.
The Carabins lost 16-6 against the second-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,399. Pepe Gonzalez threw four interceptions in the defeat, while the Carabins managed only 22 rushing yards against a tough defensive front. The team’s lone touchdown came courtesy of a 16-yard pass to Ralph Canal-Charles.
The Saskatchewan Huskies moved up to No. 4 to leapfrog the Carabins following their 24-10 win over the UBC Thunderbirds. The Huskies got two touchdowns from Saskatchewan Roughriders draft pick Daniel Wiebe and can clinch first place in the Canada West standings with a win over the Manitoba Bisons, who beat them earlier this year.
The Golden Hawks remained at No. 1 following their blowout win over Western, while the Saint Mary’s Huskies, Regina Rams, and Queen’s Gaels held firm from No. 6 to No. 8. The Windsor Lancers moved up one spot to No. 9 after narrowly beating the Queen’s Gaels, while the St. FX X-Men got back into the rankings at No. 10.
