Calgary Stampeders clinch CFL playoff spot after one-year hiatus

The Calgary Stampeders are headed back to the postseason after one year away.

The Stampeders host the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday afternoon, but already have a playoff spot guaranteed by virtue of the Edmonton Elks’ 37-24 loss to the B.C. Lions on Friday night. Depending on how the team finishes out the season, they can still be seeded anywhere from second in the West Division to fourth place, which would force a crossover into the East.

Calgary made the playoffs every season from 2005 until 2023 — an 18-season streak that was the best in all of North American sports. That came to an end in 2024, when the team finished last in the entire.

The franchise has rebounded and currently has a 9-7 record with two games remaining, but it still has a major hurdle to climb. Despite their long run of postseason qualification, the Stampeders have not won a playoff game since they captured the Grey Cup in 2018, losing in four consecutive West Semi-Finals.

Calgary will face Toronto this week, before visiting Edmonton to wrap up the regular season on Friday, October 24.
