Jalen Philpot wins Calgary Stampeders’ Herm Harrison Memorial Award for community service

Canadian receiver Jalen Philpot has won the Herm Harrison Memorial Award, which is presented annually to a Calgary Stampeders player for outstanding community service.

The 25-year-old native of Delta, B.C. has contributed in Calgary schools, the team’s off-season basketball program, and its Football 101 and flag football initiatives. He has also participated in local reading programs, Hike for Hospice, the CGY Champs program, the Canadian Blood Services campaign, and supported the Kids Up Front Poker Tournament, which raises funds for kids to participate in sports and recreational activities.

Philpot also participates in the the Every Yard Counts program, the team’s longest-standing community initiative, which sees players visit the Alberta Children’s Hospital before every home game.

“Truly thankful to receive the Herm Harrison Memorial Award,” said Philpot in a statement. “Growing up in Canada, I was that kid watching the CFL every weekend — looking up to CFL athletes such as Bobby Singh, Rolly Lumbala, and Solomon Elimimian, who were making positive impacts in my community through camps and social interactions.

“They made me believe it was possible and inspired me to chase this dream, and to now be recognized in this way means a lot. I’m grateful for everyone who’s supported me along the journey and for the chance to give back and inspire the next generation the same way I was inspired.”

The six-foot, 190-pound target has also had a productive year on the field, making 55 catches for 732 yards and two touchdowns. Originally selected in the first round of the 2022 CFL Draft, Philpot is in his fourth seasons with the Stampeders.

Harrison played for Calgary from 1964 to 1972 and was a six-time West Division all-star and three-time CFL all-star. He stayed in the city after his playing career was over and supported numerous community initiatives.

The award in his name was established in 2013 with previous winners including Rob Cote, Randy Chevrier, Bo Levi Mitchell, Joshua Bell, Rob Maver, Kamar Jorden, Colton Hunchak, Reggie Begelton, and Marken Michel.

The Calgary Stampeders (9-7) will host the Toronto Argonauts (5-12) at McMahon Stadium on Saturday, October 18 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT. The Argonauts lost in Saskatchewan this past week, while the Stampeders snapped a four-game losing skid with a 37-20 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The weather forecast in Calgary calls for a high of 11 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on TSN 1050 in Toronto and 770 CHQR in Calgary.
