Saint Mary’s Huskies move up, Windsor Lancers join U Sports football rankings

The Saint Mary’s Huskies have moved up three spots to No. 6 on the U Sports football rankings after they clobbered the Bishop’s Gaiters by a score of 48-7 to sit first place in the AUS conference standings.

The Huskies were led by a smothering defence, which limited reigning conference Most Valuable Player Justin Quirion to 68 passing yards. Justin Shibley threw three touchdown passes for Saint Mary’s, while Liam Legge rushed for 101 yards and a score in the beatdown. Now 6-1, the Huskies are in prime position to finish first in the AUS conference standings for the first time sine 2018.

Saint Mary’s move up the rankings pushed the Regina Rams, Queen’s Gaels, and Bishop’s Gaiters down one spot, respectively.

The new team at No. 10 is the Windsor Lancers, who knocked off the Ottawa Gee-Gees by a score of 30-24. Weabge Mombo rushed nine times for 142 yards and a touchdown in the win, while Windsor’s defence intercepted Josh Janssen three times, including one from Kevin Rakowska at the goal line to help seal the victory.

The St. FX X-Men, who were ranked No. 10 last week, fell off the rankings after losing to the previously winless Mount Allison Mounties by a score of 24-20.

The top five teams in the rankings — the Laurier Golden Hawks, Western Mustangs, Laval Rouge et Or, Montreal Carabins, and Saskatchewan Huskies — remained unchanged this week.
