Edmonton Elks to start Tre Ford vs. Calgary Stampeders

The Edmonton Elks have made a quarterback change following their elimination from playoff contention as Tre Ford will be under centre this week, according to Dave Campbell of 880 CHED.

The native of Niagara Falls, Ont. hasn’t thrown a pass since Sept. 21 when he started against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, throwing for 131 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 27-14 loss at Commonwealth Stadium. He was also limited along the ground in that game, rushing only twice for nine yards.

The 26-year-old has gone 2-1 as a starter this season, throwing for 604 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions and rushing 14 times for 92 yards. The club has primarily started McLeod Bethel-Thompson, who won’t dress this week, as he’s thrown for 3,748 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Ford was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2022 CFL Draft out of the University of Waterloo. He has since dressed for 36 games with the Elks, throwing for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions and carrying the ball 99 times for 863 yards and three scores.

The Elks (5-11) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (4-10-1) on Saturday, Oct. 12 with kickoff slated for 3:00 p.m. EDT. Both teams have already been eliminated from postseason contention.
