Disgraced high school football coach Kelsey McKay was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to nine counts of sexual assault and two counts of luring last year, according to CTV News.

The 54-year-old coached at Churchill High School in Winnipeg for 19 years before starting the football program at Vincent Massey Collegiate in 2009. The assaults happened between 2003 and 2016 with the victims ranging in age from 12 to 18.

McKay was charged with 22 counts of various sexual crimes in April 2022 after eight individuals came forward with historical allegations against their former high school football coach. He faced further charges in September of that year after another individual who played under McKay went to police with allegations of sexual assault.

The sentencing was carried out by Raymond Wyant of the provincial court.

“Mr. McKay abused children for his own gratification. There is no excuse for what he has done and there is no cure for the havoc he wreaked,” said Wyant during his decision read-out. “You used vulnerability to your advantage in your twisted game. Shame on you, Mr. McKay. Shame on you.”

The victims have not been publicly identified. One of the victims reportedly died by suicide three months after providing their statement to police in April 2022.
