Calgary Stampeders sign former Freaks List DT Jaylon Hutchings

The Calgary Stampeders have added American defensive tackle Jaylon Hutchings to their practice roster.

The six-foot, 305-pound defender played 62 games over six years at Texas Tech University. He recorded 193 career tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup for the Red Raiders.

Hutchings gained notoriety during his collegiate career as a member of Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List, an annual article put together by The Athletic which highlights the 100 freakiest athletes in college football. The native of Dallas, Tex. set himself apart due to his past as a high school running back, having posted over 700 yards rushing and six touchdowns as a 270-pound junior. At the time of the article, had been clocked running at speeds of 18 miles per hour, while benching over 500 pounds and squatting more than 700.

Unfortunately, Hutchings was unable to prove his athleticism in the pre-draft process after suffering a torn meniscus and went unselected in the 2024 NFL Draft. He later signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent, recording three tackles in two preseason games before being waived.

In a corresponding move, the Stamps released defensive lineman Brandon Matterson. Calgary (4-10-1) will return to action on Saturday, October 12 when they host the Edmonton Elks (5-11) at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
