Fan starts GoFundMe for twice-fined Saskatchewan Roughriders’ DL Miles Brown

Rider Nation is so upset about defensive lineman Miles Brown receiving a maximum fine for his low hit on Chris Streveler that some of their members are raising money on his behalf.

A GoFundMe campaign hit the web on Tuesday morning with a fundraising goal of $2,700, matching the approximate reported amount of Brown’s fine. As of the publishing of this article, it has elicited 17 donations worth $485, putting the campaign just shy of 20 percent of its fundraising goal.

The drive was launched by a fan from Saskatoon, Sask. named Lawrence Nugent, who claims to have been a Saskatchewan Roughriders season ticket holder since 2008. Nugent called the league’s fine “unbelievable” and an “injustice,” citing media reports that contained quotes from Winnipeg players who didn’t feel the hit was dirty.

Brown was fined half of his game cheque — the maximum amount permitted under the terms of the CFL’s collective bargaining agreement — for his low hit on Chris Streveler late in the third quarter of the Banjo Bowl. Streveler suffered a season-ending knee injury on the play, which drew a penalty for roughing the passer.

This was the second time Brown has received supplemental discipline for an illegal hit on a Winnipeg quarterback this season as he knocked Zach Collaros from the Labour Day Classic with a hit to the head and was fined. Brown recently denied being a dirty player.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-7-1) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (4-8-1) on Friday, Sept. 20 with kickoff slated for 9:30 p.m. EDT.
