Former CFL offensive lineman Ben Fairbrother was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday in Edmonton. He was just 51 years old.
Fairbrother was selected with the second overall pick in the 1997 CFL Draft by the Saskatchewan Roughriders after an outstanding collegiate career with the University of Calgary Dinos. He went on to play 58 games over four seasons in Saskatchewan, making 20 starts.
“The Saskatchewan Roughriders are deeply saddened by the passing of Ben Fairbrother, a valued member of the Club from 1997 to 2000,” the Riders said in a statement.
“Ben was a standout on the football field, but an even greater presence to his family, especially his daughters, Ella and Georgia. Our heartfelt condolences go out to them, as well as to his wife, Tanya, and their loved one.”
Following his time in Saskatchewan, Fairbrother played three more seasons with the B.C. Lions. He suited up in another 37 games before retiring following the 2003 season.
Most recently, Fairbrother served as the offensive line coach for the Edmonton Wildcats in the Canadian Junior Football League. In a statement posted to their website, the team said his sudden passing will leave “a deep void in our organization and in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
“Ben joined the Wildcats 4 years ago and quickly became an integral part of our team. His dedication, expertise, and kindness touched everyone who worked with him. He was not just a valued colleague but a mentor to our players … Ben’s contributions to the Wildcats were invaluable, and his legacy will be felt for years to come.”
Fairbrother was killed after he collided with an SUV while going east on 118 Avenue. The driver of the car was unharmed, while a passenger was treated for minor injuries. Edmonton Police report that the speed of the motorcycle may have been a factor in the crash.
