The nephew of Calgary native and Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien signed with the team in March after spending the 2023 season as a member of the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and New York Jets. He threw for 172 yards and one interception, posting an 0-1 record as a starter.
The 28-year-old originally signed with the Denver Broncos after going unselected in the 2019 NFL Draft and spent four seasons with the team. He went 2-1 over three regular season starts with the team, throwing for 778 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
Rypien was born in Spokane, Wash. but is eligible for dual citizenship. He was a four-year starter at Boise State where he passed for 13,578 yards, 90 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions and was named three-time first-team All-Mountain West Conference and the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
The Bears finished at the bottom of the NFC North in 2023 with a record of 7-10. The team used the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to select quarterback Caleb Williams out of USC.
