Montréal Carabins open 2024 season atop U Sports football rankings

Published on

The Montréal Carabins have opened the 2024 season as the consensus top team in all of U Sports football.

The squad opened their season with a 45-14 win over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or as reigning Hec Crighton Trophy winner Jonathan Sénécal threw for 280 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Defensive lineman Jeremiah Ojo, who made the recent edition of the 2025 CFL Draft prospect rankings, got off to a hot start as part of a dominant defence, making 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

Montréal went 7-1 during the regular season in 2023 and rattled off four playoff wins to secure the 58th Vanier Cup over the UBC Thunderbirds by a score of 16-9. The club’s defence was stellar en route to the championship, allowing only 21 total points in victories over Sherbrooke, Laval, Western, and the Thunderbirds.

The Western Mustangs have opened the season in the No. 2 spot following their 38-11 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, which saw Keon Edwards and Keanu Yazbeck both reach the century mark along the ground. UBC, Laval, and Laurier round out the top five.

Canada West will open its season this coming week as the Regina Rams visit the Calgary Dinos, the Alberta Golden Bears visit the UBC Thunderbirds, and the Saskatchewan Huskies visit the Manitoba Bisons. The three-time reigning AUS champion St. FX X-Men will also see their first action after opening the season with a bye, as is the case for the York Lions (OUA) and McGill Redbirds (RSEQ).
