The Calgary Stampeders have signed former Montreal Alouettes returner Chandler Worthy.
The 30-year-old had the second-best kickoff return average in the CFL in 2023, returning 48 kickoffs for 1,136 yards. He also fielded 56 punts for 544 yards and one touchdown, and four missed field goals for 96 yards as a member of the Alouettes.
The native of Griffin, Ga. missed time due to an ankle injury and was replaced by rookie returner James Letcher Jr., who cemented himself as the Alouettes’ top option during the team’s Grey Cup run. That prompted Worthy’s release on May 1 prior to the start of training camp.
In 45 career CFL games, Worthy has recorded 3,156 kickoff return yards, 1,633 punt return yards, 315 missed field goal return yards, and three return touchdowns. He has also posted 461 receiving yards and 38 rushing yards while hauling in four majors through the air. In 2022, he was named an East Division all-star for his efforts.
Worthy played 45 collegiate games over four seasons at Troy University, earning first-team all-Sun Belt honours as a senior. He caught 137 passes for 1,767 yards, carried 34 times for 176 yards, and had 81 kickoff returns for 1,919 yards. He scored 14 career touchdowns for the Trojans including 11 receiving, one rushing, and two on kickoff returns.
The Stampeders also added American linebacker Jacob Roberts to their practice roster.
Roberts played his senior season at Wake Forest in 2023, appearing in 12 games and making nine starts for the Demon Deacons. He recorded 83 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, six sacks and two forced fumbles.
Prior to transferring, the native of Charlotte, N.C. played three seasons at North Carolina A&T. In 32 career games, Roberts made 218 tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, five interceptions, one fumble recovery and six blocked kicks. He was a second-team all-conference selection in each of his seasons with the Aggies.
In a corresponding move, the Stampeders have placed American defensive lineman Hamilcar Rashed Jr. on the suspended list.
The Calgary Stampeders (4-6) will return to action on Monday, September 2 when they host the Edmonton Elks (3-7) for the Labour Day Classic.
